What if your pet has an emergency while you’re away?

You’ve found a great pet sitter, so now you’re planning a vacation without your beasty buddy. But how can you help the sitter act as your agent in an emergency if you can’t be reached?

Along with your feeding, medicating and other care instructions, consider creating a pet care emergency authorization document, which states your veterinary care preferences. Then give a signed copy to your pet sitter and veterinarian.

That way, if you or your travelling companions can’t be reached, the document will state your financial and ethical concerns regarding emergency care.

Also, be sure you and your pet sitter have agreed on how expenses will be handled while you’re gone — whether that involves reimbursement or providing a form of payment.
