Treats for hounds and their humans

Treats for hounds and their humans

We take care keeping our dogs away from our plates—for their own sakes. But there are foods that you and your canine companion can enjoy together.

Carrots and green beans are just two of them. The same goes for apples, blueberries and cucumbers. Watermelon’s fine too, but hold the rind and the seeds. Bananas are another canine-friendly fruit, but they’re high in sugar so offer them sparingly.

Cooked white rice helps settle a dog’s stomach, but it should be fed in moderation too. The same goes for dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese. Popcorn is another safe treat—without the butter and salt, that is. Ditto that for unsalted peanut butter if it doesn’t contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that’s toxic to dogs.

Whichever treat you offer, give it separately and not off your plate. That way you won’t encourage begging.
