Palliative Care for Veterinary Cancer Patients

Palliative Care for Veterinary Cancer Patients

Although advanced therapies have greatly enhanced the outcomes in pets with cancer, in some cases, treatment takes the form of palliation — defined as treating the symptoms of a disease or disorder, to maximize patient comfort, rather than attempting to cure it. On this show, Dr. Stacey Fox-Alvarez, a clinical assistant professor of oncology, will discuss different forms of palliative treatment used by veterinarians and how these treatments work to improve the quality of life of dogs and cats with cancer. She will also discuss the importance of monitoring and prioritizing quality of life in patients with cancer, whether they receive advanced treatment or palliative care alone, and how working with a cancer specialist can help meet these goals.
