Helping aging dogs get around

Like people, aging dogs have a tougher time getting around. Stiffness and unsteadiness can turn a simple routine into an obstacle course. But pooch parents can ease their buddies’ burdens a lot.

For dogs still able to climb stairs, anti-slip treads can help. And when negotiating stairs becomes too tough, ramps provide a workaround. For senior dogs used to jumping up onto a sofa or bed, pet steps can help them reach their favorite perches.

To help mobility on smooth floors, try adding area rugs to prevent slipping. Some dogs also do well with non-skid socks or toe grips.

And when stiffness makes it challenging for a dog to bend down to eat or drink out of a bowl, raising bowls onto a platform can help. Adding more water bowls around the house will also ensure that water is always within a dog’s easy reach.
