Wellness examinations and laboratory tests root out illness in senior cats

Cats hold their cards close to the vest. Even when they’re sick, they often hide signs until the disease has progressed. That’s why wellness examinations and laboratory tests are key—especially in senior cats that have an increased risk of medical problems.

Essential laboratory evaluation of senior cats involves blood and urine tests. A complete blood count provides information about blood cells, which can identify infection or anemia. A biochemistry profile evaluates organs and tissues by measuring components they release into the blood. Measurement of thyroid hormone looks for excess levels, which are indicative of hyperthyroidism. Finally, urine is analyzed to monitor kidney health and look for signs of diabetes.

The sooner veterinarians can root out medical problems in our feline friends, the earlier they can be treated.
