It happens every holiday season. We attend office parties and family get-togethers and eat loads of food. And pie.
The festivities almost always include some of the tastiest and most calorie-packed delicacies. Like pie. And all that overindulging can lead to what seems like inevitable holiday weight gain.
But experts say there are ways to avoid weight gain.
First, get your body in motion. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to maintain body weight. The more you exercise, the more calories you burn. Enlist a friend so you can keep each other accountable. Schedule long walks, trips to the gym or try a new sport.
Enjoy all the gatherings, but take care not to attend them on an empty stomach. Experts suggest eating a healthy snack or light meal beforehand to make the treat table less of a temptation. When you do partake, use a small plate when picking up finger foods and load up on veggies.
Don’t feel forced to eat just because people keep offering food. It’s not rude to decline. Saying “no thanks, I just ate” is fine. Avoid parking near the food table. Focus on catching up with friends and family instead of snacking.
One more thing: Be aware of the spirits. Those seemingly harmless mixed drinks pack a lot of calories and next thing you know, your self-control has vanished and the Chex Mix bowl is suspiciously empty.
The takeaway here? Enjoy the holiday treats (especially the pie), but offset the increased calories by making specific exercise plans and following through.
Not having to fret about whether your clothes will fit after the holidays will make the season all the more enjoyable.
