You have likely heard “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But did you know that eight lifestyle habits can add decades to your life?
A new research study from the University of Illinois presented eight habits to lengthen your lifespan.
Based on data from more than 700,000 United States veterans 40 years and older, the study found that men and women who adopted the eight habits by middle age lived at least 23 years longer than those who didn’t.
You might guess some of the habits, such as not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation and not abusing drugs. However, being physically active is just as important. Adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle training each week, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
Good sleep hygiene contributes as well. That means having a strict sleep schedule, following a routine each night and optimizing your bedroom for sleep.
The sixth habit is managing stress. We all face challenges that can be overwhelming. Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will not only help you but the loved ones around you.
Your diet is important, too. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains and milk — either fat-free or low-fat. Protein is also encouraged. Seafood, lean meats, poultry, eggs, soy products, nuts, seeds and much more are packed with protein. Try to stay within your daily caloric needs.
At least one habit falls into the “fun” category. Social connectedness — meaning friends who help you feel cared for — not only leads to a longer life, but also to a healthier and happier one.
