Why cow’s milk isn’t good for cats

When it comes to pampering your cat, there’s nothing better than a saucer of milk, right? It turns out that’s a myth, and here’s why.

Kittens drink their mothers’ milk until they start eating solid food. Then they lose the ability to break down the lactose in milk, making them largely lactose intolerant.

If it’s not digested, lactose stays in the digestive tract where it ferments and attracts fluid. That results in gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea and an uncomfortable cat.

Even abandoned kittens shouldn’t be fed cow’s milk but should get kitten milk replacer instead. It’s formulated specifically for a cat’s nutritional needs.

If you want to treat your cat, pick a healthy protein snack instead of milk.
