During the past couple of years, Bluetooth devices — like Apple AirTags — have gained a rep as hacks for finding luggage. So, it’s no surprise that manufacturers have designed pet accessories to accommodate them, too. But AirTags aren’t great for tracking lost pets.
Unless you’re trying to find a pet indoors — like a cowering cat — an AirTag won’t do you much good. That’s because beyond about 800 feet, you won’t pick up the tag with your phone alone. So, it’s useless for tracking pets missing outdoors.
Worse yet, some pets will chew and even swallow AirTags. Beyond potentially obstructing the digestive tract, AirTags contain batteries, which can leak internally once ingested.
Fortunately, there’s a better option — that’s microchipping your pet, along with tagging your buddy’s collar or harness.
