When it comes to supporting endangered wildlife, up to 80 percent of Americans are onboard. On the other hand, most people don’t realize that unlawful trade in wildlife is a big part of the problem.
Trafficking in wildlife — dead or alive — grosses an estimated 20 billion dollars every year. From tigers to rhinos, sea turtles to coral, the list of animals at risk is a very long one. While some are sold as pets, many are used for clothing, souvenirs — even folk medicine. Whatever the reason, animals are being captured, harmed or killed, all in the name of profit.
But there’s something we can all do about it. A look at wildlife.org will show you the animals at greatest risk and products on the “Do Not Buy” list. Because if the demand stops, the trafficking can, too.
