When ear infections stray

Ear infections are always on the list of most common canine diseases. However, even though they’re infections, they’re usually not infectious — that is, transmissible from dog to dog. But that’s not always the case.

Although many canine ear infections stem from an allergy, sometimes Pseudomonas [sue-dδ-MŌ-nus] bacteria are involved. Pseudomonas infections are not only notoriously tough to treat — they may spread to other pets or even people in the family. What’s more, Pseudomonas has a penchant for dampness, so pooches frequenting dog parks and swimming pools are at higher risk.

But you can take steps to stop the spread. Don’t share ear cleaners or medications among pets. And if your furry friend has a Pseudomonas infection, stay away from dog parks and swimming pools. Above all, keep in touch with your veterinarian until the infection resolves.
