When A Horse Can’t Sweat: Coping With Equine Anhidrosis

Anhidrosis, or the inability to sweat, poses a dangerous situation for horses in high heat or exercise. Known as “non-sweaters,” horses with this disease can experience extreme distress on hot days or when outside. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease, with the only known effective approach being to move the affected horse to a cooler climate. On this show, Dr. Sally DeNotta, UF’s equine extension veterinarian, will share what horse owners need to know about this disease, including how to recognize it and ways to minimize potential stress on horses affected with this condition. She’ll also discuss current research aimed at identifying the cause of equine anhidrosis and developing useful treatments.
