Watching our pets like it’s the holiday — all year long

It’s always important to watch our pets carefully during the holidays. But it’s even better if we can resolve to mind these suggestions all year long.

For starters, it’s crucial not to let our furry friends gobble a stack of treats all at once. Also, steer clear of high-fat foods — including poultry skin — that can cause serious pancreatitis, at least in dogs. Ornaments made of salted or play dough should also be off limits. Make sure you mind trash cans as well, which may be a source of other hazards, like bones.

Eating tinsel, string or ribbon can cause trouble too — especially in cats. The same goes for nibbling plants, like poinsettias, holly or — especially — lilies. And let’s keep all pets away from super risky foods, drinks and additives like chocolate, alcohol and xylitol — as well as plastic or mylar packaging.
