As the war in Ukraine rages on, people across the globe are stepping up to help the most vulnerable. That includes U.S. veterinarians coming to the aid of pets belonging to Ukrainian refugees.
One of these helpers is Dr. Jon Geller, an emergency veterinarian from Colorado. The founder of Street Dog Coalition — a nonprofit that provides free pet care to the homeless — Geller is no stranger to helping those in need. In mid-March 2022, he headed to Romania’s border with Ukraine, armed only with two suitcases of veterinary equipment and a will to contribute.
Along with local veterinarians, veterinary students and international volunteers, Geller helped build a tent camp that provides veterinary services to Ukrainian refugees and their pets. Their work provides a glimmer of hope to people and animals who’ve already been through so much.
