Human trends can affect our pets in all kinds of ways. As an example, veterinarians in areas where marijuana has been legalized are seeing an increase in marijuana toxicity in pets.

The great majority of affected animals are dogs, although sometimes cats or other animals are involved.

Symptoms of marijuana toxicity usually include nervous system signs, like unsteadiness, shaking or restlessness. Sometimes dogs will vomit or lose bladder control. In severe cases, a dog might have a seizure, slip into a coma or even die.

While death from marijuana toxicity is rare, it can occur in small or medium-sized dogs that have eaten baked goods or butter containing THC, the potent active chemical in marijuana.

The prognosis for a dog that has ingested marijuana is often good with prompt treatment. But remember … the best treatment is prevention.
