The tail tells the story

The tail tells the story

For those of you first-time cat parents trying to decipher your kitty’s moods, don’t forget to read the tail — that’s t-a-i-l.

Your cat’s tail is pretty unique, even when compared to its kin. Among all feline species, only domestic cats can hold their tail straight up in the air when they walk. In fact, that stance says your cat is in a friendly mood. If, in addition, the tail trembles from the bottom up, your furry friend is probably happy and excited. Conversely, a tail drooping low between the legs tells you your cat is scared or trying to back away from a conflict.

Even a wag tells a story. A sweeping, slapping tail wag means your cat is annoyed, and if you don’t take notice you could be in for a swat — or worse.

So remember: when it comes to your meower’s moods, forewarned is definitely forearmed.
