Pet food recalls sometimes involve contamination with toxins. Recently, certain lots of dog food were recalled for high levels of aflatoxins that caused the deaths of more than 70 dogs and sickened over 80 more.
Aflatoxins are produced by certain molds found in grains, especially corn. Even if there’s no visible evidence of mold, aflatoxins may be present. And when ingested, they can cause liver failure as manifested by vomiting; diarrhea; lethargy and jaundice—that’s yellowing of the skin, gums and eyes. When left untreated, it can be fatal.
If you’re concerned about similar signs in your pet, stop feeding their regular food and call your veterinarian right away.
