Surviving pre-purchase exams

Surviving pre-purchase exams

If you’re looking to buy or sell a horse, you’ll likely be involved in a pre-purchase exam. This is when the buyer’s veterinarian examines a horse for soundness and suitability. A thorough physical exam, including X-rays, is the best way to tell if a horse has, or may develop, lameness. You could say there’s a lot riding on it.

As the buyer, you need to be involved every step of the way. Try to assess a horse already trained for the role you have in mind instead of gambling on how he might do with experience. Discuss your expectations with your veterinarian, and be alert during the exam.

If you’re the seller, have your horse examined ahead of time to ensure he’s in tip-top shape. Know your horse’s history, medical and otherwise, and be ready to answer any questions.

Remember, prepping goes a long way in surviving the stress of pre-purchase exams.
