Standing the heat

Standing the heat

Your pooch’s paws might look tough, but there are times when they could use pampering.

You know what it feels like to walk barefoot on scorching pavement, metal or blacktop. That heat can actually burn your dog’s footpads. Pad burns are not obvious right away, but your dog will give you clues. Your pooch might limp, slow down or just plain refuse to walk. Some dogs lick their burned paws. Eventually, you might see blisters or discoloration.

If you notice any of these signs during the sweltering heat, find a grassy area for your pooch. Then apply cool water, a wet towel or wrapped ice to those parched paws. If signs continue, consult your veterinarian.

Next time you plan a summer trip with your dog, be careful of sizzling surfaces like open boats, docks and truck beds. And take along a wet towel to help your canine stand the heat.
