With spring planting underway, let’s talk about plants to avoid if you have an inquisitive pet.
You may have heard about the danger lilies pose to cats, but they can’t be overstated. Many of the most common varieties — like tiger, Easter or day lilies — are so toxic to cats that ingesting even a small amount of pollen or some water from the vase can be fatal. Lily of the valley is also dangerous, and spring crocuses can cause digestive upset. But remember, autumn crocus is highly poisonous.
Dogs get in the most trouble when they chew on bulbs — particularly narcissus and hyacinths. And to make matters worse, they’re attracted to smells from organic fertilizers. While not poisonous in their own right, they can obstruct a dog’s digestive tract when ingested in large amounts.
So, while you’re tending to beauty, keep safety in mind.
