Small furry cool-off

Small furry cool-off

Bunnies, guinea pigs and other small furry mammals can wilt in hot weather. Here are some tips to make cool-off a breeze.

Keep your fuzzy friend out of the sun, even inside, and make sure the cage is well ventilated. That means aquarium tanks are out. Use a fan to create an indirect breeze and boost the cooling quotient by placing a wet towel over your critter’s cage. A ceramic tile placed in your buddy’s favorite spot also creates a refreshing oasis. And try freezing water in plastic bottles then putting them in the cage for additional cool comfort. Misting your buddy’s ears will also help him give off heat.

If heat stroke hits, don’t dunk your buddy in cold water. That causes a drastic drop in body temperature. Instead, wet his ears and feet with cool water, and get to the veterinary clinic in two shakes of a rabbit’s tail.
