Shelter animals are front and center

The year 2020 brought us a world of hurt. But one bright light was the glow of pet companionship along with a surge in shelter adoptions. And this year, shelter dogs are having a moment.

Phelan, a 4-year-old canine mix, was recently crowned the speediest dog in America by the American Kennel Club. After clocking speeds of over 32 miles an hour, she beat out numerous purebreds to win the first-ever AKC Fastest Dog USA competition.

The beginning of 2021 also brings us the first presidential shelter dog. Major, a German shepherd, was adopted by the Bidens from a Delaware animal shelter 3 years ago. Together with his buddy, Champ—the family’s other German shepherd—he’ll be the First Dog of the United States.

Shelter animals deserve all the attention they can get, so hat’s off to these canine ambassadors.
