Eye infections are common in pets and horses and are routinely treated with topical antibiotics. However, a recent study shows a troubling trend in antimicrobial resistance.
The study zeroes in on bacterial keratitis, an infection of the cornea that warrants immediate attention. If left untreated, it can rob an animal of its sight within days — sometimes even hours.
The problem is, many of the bacterial culprits are ramping up resistance to commonly used medications, sometimes becoming multidrug-resistant. This is especially so in specialty referral practices where many of the most severe cases are treated. What’s more, some of these bacterial species can affect people too.
Now’s the time to key in on antibiotic-sparing approaches — to help rescue the power of drugs that can save vision.
