Some dogs really like fruit. After all, they’re omnivores, which means they eat both animal and plant materials. But are all fruits safe — and how much can they eat?
Grapes, raisins and some wild berries are flat-out toxic to dogs. It’s also best to steer clear of avocados and tomatoes, which sometimes cause problems. But others are fair game, depending on your dog’s tastes and medical issues. That said, it’s always good to run any diet change by your veterinarian first.
Fruits are best used as treats — under 10% of your dog’s diet and less if your pooch is diabetic or obese. Many fruits are high in sugar — especially dried varieties — but fresh apples, berries and melons are on point. Just remove the peels, rinds, pits and seeds before treating your dog, since they can be dangerous if swallowed.
