Revisiting a hot topic

Some topics are so important that they bear repeating every year, and warm-weather pet safety is one of them.

It’s often best to keep pets inside on hot days. Even then, creating several temperature zones — that is, regions of different temperature — in your house will let pets try out what feels best. And always leave out plenty of fresh water and make sure your furry friend can shelter in shade.

If you must take your buddy outside, try doing it during the coolest parts of the day or evening — particularly if the outing involves exercise. Avoid hot surfaces that can burn paws, and never leave your pet inside a car. No matter how the weather appears, rapidly rising temperatures can kill.

Ask your veterinarian how to tell if your pet is overheating. You might also want to ask if a summer haircut or sunscreen application is in order.
