Recipes for feline foodies

When it comes to homemade cat food recipes, you can find loads of options. Problem is, most lack essential nutrients — or even contain potentially toxic ingredients.

It’s ironic, because the trend in homemade recipes really ramped up about 10 years ago when toxic compounds were found in commercial pet foods from China.

A recent study of over 100 homemade diet recipes for healthy adult cats found that none provided all the necessary essential ingredients. In fact, only 5 recipes contained all but 1 essential ingredient. What’s more, 7 percent of the recipes included onions, garlic or other ingredients potentially toxic for cats.

No diet is perfect, but there’s little need to fear commercial pet foods these days. Still, if you want to go the homemade route, work with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist for the best results.
