Producers: Establish a vet-client-patient relationship by summer

Many farmers and ranchers already have a relationship with a trusted veterinarian. But if you prefer to treat your animals yourself, you’ll have some changes in store.

For the time being, farmers and ranchers can buy antibiotics off the shelves in most farm supply stores. But come June 2023, doing so will require a prescription from a veterinarian. First, the producer will need to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, which is required before a veterinarian can write a prescription. While the cost of antibiotics from feed stores, or elsewhere, isn’t expected to rise, a veterinary visit to get the ball rolling carries a fee.

So, now’s the time to schedule an appointment so the veterinarian can get to know your herd. That way, your animals won’t experience any gaps in treatment.
