Pets Get Sick of Stress

Doctors have long known that bereavement, financial concerns and other forms of stress can literally make you sick. But did you know that stress can have the same effect on pets?

Recent research shows that cats exposed to stressful situations, such as a change in routine or decreased human contact, had a two- to ten-fold increase in behaviors that can indicate illness, such as a reduced appetite and elimination outside the litter box.

In dogs, stress can lead to panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, pacing and other problems.

Birds, rabbits and other pets can similarly lose their appetite, develop fur or feather problems, and become listless or agitated due to stress.

So try to provide your pet with a consistent routine, relaxed meal times, diverting toys and a place to rest away from household hubbub. You’ll both sleep better.
