Pet food recall redux

Pet food recall redux

For your buddy’s sake, it pays to stay up to date on pet food recalls.

In June, the US Food and Drug Administration — or USDA — recalled a dog food containing high levels of beef thyroid hormone. It’s the second time this year that the USDA has issued a recall for the same problem.

Thyroid hormone is produced by a gland in the cow’s neck, or gullet. Gullet meat is off limits in the human market, but it’s still used in pet food. Although the thyroid gland is removed from the meat, bits of it can remain behind.

After ingesting high levels of thyroid hormone, dogs may be restless and drink and urinate more than usual. An increased heart rate is common too.

Pet food recalls are listed online at www.fda.gov. And always keep tabs on your pet’s demeanor to know if something’s off.
