Pet dental issues that can’t wait

When something’s off with our pets, waiting and watching is occasionally the best course of action. But with certain dental problems, treatment shouldn’t wait.

A case in point is a space where a tooth would normally be. Timely oral X-rays can help locate teeth or pathology lurking under the gums.

Retained primaries can also cause problems by crowding out permanent teeth. The remedy is extracting the persistent teeth—sooner versus later.

Then there are fractured teeth, which can pave the way for painful bacterial infections. The solution is a root canal or extraction. The same goes for discolored teeth, which are usually dead.

Finally, when dental plaque results in gum inflammation, a cleaning will prevent more serious gum disease.

It pays to watch for these dental urgencies so you can nip bigger problems in the bud.
