Parvo Is Alive and Well on the Gulf Coast

Some people think that canine parvovirus is a disease of the past. Well, as Mark Twain once said of his own death, the reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated.

Parvo is alive and well on the Gulf Coast. This highly contagious virus is very hardy, surviving for up to five months in warm, moist environments like those in the South.

Parvovirus infection is potentially fatal. It attacks rapidly multiplying cells, such as those in the intestinal tract and immune system. Pups can become gravely ill with vomiting, diarrhea and secondary infections. Treatment requires intensive care and is not always successful.

Fortunately, you can easily protect your new pup from this killer virus. All puppies should receive multiple vaccinations between the ages of six and twenty weeks, with a booster at one year. Don’t put it off. Your new friend is depending on you.
