With lots of pets reaching their golden years, veterinary practices are creating ways to pamper them. Many efforts focus on the older pet’s loss of condition, achy joints and decreased mobility.
For example, providing a ramp to the clinic entrance keeps elderly dogs from having to negotiate stairs. Once inside, flooring with a slip-proof texture might pave the way to a well-cushioned waiting area. On the other hand, seniors could be led down a rubber mat-lined hallway directly to an exam room. Sometimes quieter exam rooms are reserved for pets with decreased vision who startle easily. There, cushions or comfy beds help seniors take the load off sensitive joints. Large pets might be examined on the floor, while smaller ones are lifted onto mat-lined table tops.
The bottom line? Older pets deserve all the pampering they can get.
