Pair-bonding is all in your head

Pair-bonding is all in your head

Do some people think you’re too attached to your pet? Now there’s scientific evidence that could back up the strength of your bond.

A recent study observed the brain activity of moms when looking at children and canine family members. During step one, the mothers described their bonds with both. In step two, each woman viewed photos of her children and then her dog, alternating with those of kids and canines belonging to another mom. Simultaneous MRIs showed the activity in various parts of the woman’s brain. Meanwhile, the moms rated the photos on the basis of the satisfaction and enthusiasm they evoked. The result was that, when looking at photographs of their dogs, the mothers’ brain activity was similar to when they were looking at photographs of their children.

So the next time you hug your furry friend, remember that the bond is brain-deep.
