One Health and disaster relief

One Health and disaster relief

Like humanitarian groups crossing geopolitical borders to aid people during disasters, veterinary nonprofits provide international disaster relief and more for animals.

Such relief efforts can help people prepared to risk their lives to stay and help their animals, whether they be pets or livestock. Every country and every disaster has its own needs. But at the core of them all is the One Health concept, defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the intertwined welfare of animals, people and the environment.

Some of the duties that veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other volunteers may perform include treating injured animals, dispensing vaccines, talking to farmers about livestock husbandry and educating the public about animal-transmitted diseases. After urgent care, the long-term goals for these nonprofits are usually education and outreach.
