Another Salmonella outbreak has been in the news — this time linked to pet bearded dragons. First reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, in October 2022, the outbreak has affected at least 32 people across 20 states. At least 10 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
Over half the cases have involved children under the age of 5, but people of all ages have been affected. Salmonella infections are most concerning in those with weak or immature immune systems.
While this doesn’t mean you need to rehome your bearded dragon, reptile pets shouldn’t be handled by children under five. Everything that comes in contact with a reptile should be cleaned and disinfected, and frequent thorough hand washing is a must.
