My Horse is Coughing – Now What?

My Horse is Coughing – Now What?

Various inflammatory and hyper-reactive airway conditions causing cough in the horse are typically characterized as equine asthma. Among these are inflammatory airway disease, the term used to describe the condition seen in young horses that show signs of exercise intolerance and intermittent cough but are normal at rest, and recurrent airway obstruction, also known as heaves and characterized by airway narrowing, mucus production and bronchospasm. Unlike horses with inflammatory airway disease, horses with recurrent airway obstruction are not normal while resting, and usually show an increased respiratory rate and/or cough. On this show, Dr. Amanda House, an equine medicine specialist, will discuss the different manifestations of equine asthma, and what horse owners need to know.
