Dogs and cats love to lick. Unfortunately, once in a while, they become obsessed with licking the same spot, usually the top of a paw or leg.
Some lick from pain, some from boredom, and some from an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Whatever the initial cause, the constant trauma leads to a vicious cycle of irritation and more licking.
Eventually, moisture and skin damage create an ulcerated, infected scar known as a lick granuloma. These pesky sores can be tough to treat and typically require long-term therapy.
A variety of treatment options are used, including oral and topical medications to calm the irritation and heal infection. Protective bandages and even drugs can be used to reduce obsessive-compulsive behavior.
Without treatment, a lick granuloma can potentially lead to a deeper and more serious limb infection. So don’t delay. See your veterinarian and lick that lick!
