Kibble for good measure

Kibble for good measure

It turns out that pet parents may be getting it all wrong when “measuring” their pets’ food.

A recent study enrolled 100 pooch parents and asked them to portion out a quarter cup, a half cup or one cup of kibble by using various one- to two-cup measuring utensils. Then each amount was compared to the actual weight of the precisely measured food.

Depending on which utensil was used, imprecise measurements ranged from nearly 50 percent too little to 150 percent too much. The most blatant errors occurred when eyeballing the smallest amounts.

This might not seem like such a big deal, but when repeated every day, pets could become undernourished or obese.

There’s an easy way around the issue. If you put your pet’s bowl on a small kitchen scale and measure as you pour, you’ll get it right every time.
