June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

Men’s Health Awareness Month is observed in June each year to remind men that they can take steps to be healthier for themselves and their families.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the five leading causes of death among men are heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, respiratory disease and stroke. Taking a few preventive actions can reduce the risks for men.

First, get regular checkups. Doctors are the best ally in treating health conditions and catching potential problems. Men can work with their doctors to determine which screenings are the best for their age. These include checks for prostate cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. If a harmful health condition is found, men can work with their doctors to determine the best treatment options.

Second, don’t smoke. Over 17 percent of adult men in the United States smoke cigarettes. Smoking and use of other tobacco products contributes to a slew of health conditions, including respiratory disease and heart disease. If you do smoke, speak with your doctor about ways to quit.

Third, limit alcohol consumption and eat healthy. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit it to two drinks per day. Heavy alcohol consumption includes the risk of certain cancers, including liver, mouth and throat, and conditions like high blood pressure. Overall, eat a diet that’s rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains to stay healthy and maintain an average weight.

This month, encourage the men in your life to take control of their health by following these preventive actions. It will have a great impact for themselves — and their loved ones.
