Household hazards

A closet full of household helpers might make your life easier, but it can hold life-threatening hazards for your dog or cat.

Batteries, detergents and fabric softeners are some essentials of modern life, but they can cause ulcers from the mouth to the stomach in any dog or cat that munches on them. The same goes for bleach, drain cleaners, ammonia and toilet bowl cleaners. Mothballs can cause even more problems, like vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, increased drinking and urinating.

Yard products can be just as sinister. Ingestion of fuels, like kerosene, gasoline and tiki torch fluid can cause drooling, staggering and labored breathing. Snail and slug bait, herbicides and fertilizers also contain ingredients that can sicken your dog or cat.

So keep your cleaners and conveniences out of paw’s reach. You’ll both feel better for it.
