Herky-jerky treat troubles

If your pet drools over dried meat treats, this could be life-saving information.

Since 2007, nearly 600 pets have died and 3,300 have become ill in the United States after eating dried meat treats from China. Chicken, duck and even sweet potato products have all been implicated, but the specific cause of the problem remains unknown.

Most animals affected are dogs, but cats have fallen ill too. In most cases, signs point to gastrointestinal problems or kidney damage.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been working to crack the case since the first deaths were reported. To help in this effort, FDA officials are asking veterinarians to provide details about any animal sickened by eating these popular dried meat and produce treats.

Until this mystery can be solved, many veterinarians are recommending that pet owners nix these dried meat and produce products in favor of safer treat options.
