Helping the animal victims of the war in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine is a tragedy for humans and animals alike. As people escape their homes to save their lives, many are taking their beloved pets with them. For the pets left behind — not to mention livestock, zoo animals and others — the future is often bleak.

That’s why veterinarians and their dedicated assistants in Ukraine and neighboring countries, like Poland, are providing heroic help. For example, staff members from a no-kill shelter in Poland — only 30 miles from the border with Ukraine — are making harrowing trips into Ukraine to rescue animals from shelters or from people who can’t bring them as they flee.

These dedicated folks need all the help they can get to pay for food, animal transport, medicine and equipment. You can find U.S. and global charities online that are providing support.
