If you like your hounds on the hulky side, you should know about bloat — the number one killer of certain large-breed dogs.
Bloat develops when excess food, water or gas fills a dog’s stomach, causing it to twist. Blockage of the stomach’s contents and blood supply results in a rapidly deteriorating health.
Some risk factors for bloat are beyond your control, but others can be avoided. Before deciding on a large-breed pooch, do your homework. Steer clear of canine family trees with known cases of bloat. Once your hound is home, offer several small meals instead of a big one each day, preferably using a blend of wet and dry food. Feed your buddy alone in a quiet, calm area. And before and after meals, limit water intake, stress and activity.
Stay a step ahead of bloat and keep your colossal canine sitting pretty.
