Heatstroke in Dogs: Prevention, Treatment and Complications

Heatstroke in Dogs: Prevention, Treatment and Complications

Heat stroke in dogs is a veterinary medical emergency, but also is a largely avoidable situation —  one no pet owner, or veterinarian, wants to be faced with. On this show, Dr. Leo Londoño, an emergency and critical care specialist, will discuss why dogs are at particular risk for overheating due to their physiology, which differs from that of humans. He’ll share signs to look for that would indicate your pet is undergoing heat stress, and what pet owners should – and shouldn’t – do in hot weather to reduce the chances of heat stroke.  He’ll also discuss what pet owners can do prior to transporting their dog to the veterinarian, as well as how veterinarians treat patients that have experienced heat stroke.
