Getting your cat’s cold shoulder

Getting your cat’s cold shoulder

If you wonder why your cat won’t come when you call, you’re not the only one.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo recently performed simple tests on 20 household felines in the cats’ own homes. When the owner was out of sight, a researcher played recordings of three strangers, each calling the cat’s name, followed by a recording of the owner doing likewise. Each time, the researcher watched the cat for body language linked to recognition, like certain ear, tail or head movements; vocalization; pupil dilation or paw shifting. The cats showed more signs of recognition when hearing their owner’s voices, but they didn’t come to any of the calls.

It all comes down to how cats evolved. Cats were never taught to obey humans like dogs were. Instead, they chose to reap the benefits of living near us. So don’t let it rub you the wrong way!
