Full-fat foods gaining in popularity

Full-fat foods gaining in popularity

When it comes to healthful eating and good nutrition, there’s enough conflicting information out there to make a person’s head spin.

Eggs are bad for you … wait, they’re actually a great way to start the day. Fruit juice is a winning choice … but too much of it can make kids overweight. Eat more whole grains! Scratch that … it’s better to cut carbs.

What’s a health-conscious consumer to do? Well, here’s what people are doing: heading away from modified, low-fat versions of foods and opting instead for full-fat products. That’s what data from the Credit Suisse Research Institute reveals.

The institute’s report projects that foods with plenty of saturated fat … such as whole milk and real butter … will continue to increase in popularity, more so than margarines and reduced-fat or skim milk. This comes after years of experts touting a low-fat diet as the path to overall health.

The institute predicts the trend will continue with greater sales of higher-cholesterol foods, such as red meat and eggs, in coming years.

The organization says the changes reflect consumers’ gravitation toward natural, less-processed foods.

A separate Credit Suisse report that studied medical research and also surveyed nutritionists, physicians and the general public highlighted another possible factor driving these sales trends. The tide is turning in medical research, revealing that cholesterol in the foods we eat doesn’t affect heart health and overall wellness as much as scientists previously thought.

With this in mind, Credit Suisse experts project per-capita fat intake to grow by 23 percent in the next 15 years, with a 12 percent protein consumption increase and a modest decrease in carbohydrates consumed. Will these trends improve overall health and decrease obesity? Only time will tell.
