From Wildlife to Other Animals and Humans: How and Why Diseases Spread

The news is full of accounts of viruses jumping species from animal to animal and subsequently to humans. But why and how is this happening, and how are patterns of transmission changing over time? Most importantly, what does that mean for animal and human health? On this show, Dr. Maureen Long, an equine clinician and professor of virology and microbiology, will discuss several viruses, including coronavirus and monkeypox, that are known to have jumped species, with much still unknown about the long-term implications, as well as the important role of virologists and zoonotic disease specialists in monitoring and managing the spread of disease.
