When facing an emergency with your furry friend, it helps to know the do’s and don’ts. The goal is to reach the veterinary clinic as soon as possible while avoiding further injury.
Injured pets are often in pain and scared, so they may react unpredictably. Even the calmest of creatures can lash out with a bite or a scratch, so don’t try to hug or kiss your injured pet. It may be necessary to muzzle a pained pet during transport. If you don’t have a muzzle, try using a stocking on your dog or wrap your cat in towel. But never muzzle an animal that’s vomiting.
When examining your pet, do so slowly and only if it won’t make things worse. If you discover a wound or a fracture, consider applying a splint or bandage prior to transport.
Finally, call the veterinary clinic to alert them to your situation and imminent arrival. Confine your pet during transport and take care getting to the clinic.
