You’re brushing your cat just like all the other times and you see them — flakes collecting on the brush. Could that be…cat dandruff?
Feline dandruff is real, and there are numerous causes. Some are relatively simple — like obesity or arthritis, which complicate self-grooming. Others, like external parasites, skin infections or allergies, may be more involved. Then there are those, like cancer, that pose serious problems.
If you see more than a few flakes or if anyone — or another pet — is symptomatic, it’s best to schedule a veterinary visit. The same goes if your cat is showing other signs. A thorough checkup, including diagnostic testing, can provide lots of information.
If underlying problems are ruled out and your cat’s diet is up to speed, the answer may be daily brushings. Then you just need to cajole your cat to play along.
