Our stoic steeds may seem unflappable, but even horses can have a tough time in sweltering heat.
The best way to help your horse on a sizzling summer day is with a constant supply of fresh water. On a cool day, a horse drinks an average of 5 to 7 gallons of water. But when the mercury soars, that number can rise to 20 gallons or more. For a herd of horses, a couple of water tanks will ensure that every horse is allowed to drink its fill. Electrolyte supplements or mineral blocks can help replenish the salt they’ve lost. Sweating horses might even like the hose turned on them.
Shade trees or airy run-in sheds help horses on pasture find heat relief. But try to rest horses inside barns, near fans, when the sun is highest and flies are most active.
Try to keep horsing around to a minimum on steamy days so that everyone can keep their cool.
